My grandmother, Frances N. and I have bonded so much over the years. From shopping to cooking to cleaning, we've done it all. One thing I just started doing recently with her is talking about her past. I learned a lot from her. My grandmother, was born on October 24, 1930, in West Point, New York. This was because her father was in the army. Her parents had an arranged marriage and immigrated from Italy. When she was nine, she moved to Panama because her father was transferred there. When she was eleven, she moved to Massachusetts because she had relatives there. My grandmother had to ration food, shoes and gasoline during World War II. My grandmother was middle-class and didn't own a car. My grandmother had to move from Panama because they thought after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese would bomb Panama next.
"World War II taught my family and I to be self-sufficient and I wouldn't be the same person I am today because I was forced to take care of my two younger sisters. I basically the woman-of-the-house growing up," my grandmother said. I think I've learned a lot from my grandmother because I've realized how easy today we all have it. For example, my father is an anesthesiologist and my mother doesn't work. At the moment, I do basic, everyday around-the-house chores. On the other hand, my grandmother cooked cleaned, and cared for her little-sisters when she was just eleven. Now, I don't know about you, but when I was eleven I wasn't doing that much work. Overall, I've learned a lot and really appreciate my time talking to my grandmother. If you haven't already, sit down with one of your elders and learn about their fascinating past.
