  1. Mesa Veterans Day Parade

Thursday, November 11, 2010, was an overcast, chili Veterans Day at first. It was also an exciting one, because Edukid had their own float in the Mesa Veterans Day Parade, (number one hundred). There were about twenty–five people there supporting Edukid. Our float was a low, red, flatbed truck, with a trailer on the back. The truck had hay in it and a colorful sombrero on it, and the trailer had hay in it and banners along the sides. Some people walked with sandwich boards alongside the float when we started, saying things like, “We love our vets!” and, “Edukids rock!” We also gave out note pads that said things like, “Go Edukids!” and little drawings, too. By this time, it had warmed up a bit. The people inside the floats wore red, white, and blue hats. And those who walked on side the float and handed out Edukid newspapers to the thick crowd of excited people.
Some other people who had floats were the Knights of Columbus council 3419, DK Cheer, the East Valley Young Marines, Packages from Home, the United States Postal Service, many girl scout troops, boy scout troops, cub scout troops, and the Mesa Parade Association President even had a float in the end! The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic Fraternal Service Organization in the world. Membership is limited to “Practical Catholic” men eighteen and up. DK Cheer is a cheerleading team in Mesa. The East Valley Young Marines is the only group of twelve through eighteen, or until you graduate, whichever comes first, that trains them for the marines. There are currently four teens involved. Packages from Home is an organization that takes donated things, packages them, and sends them to soldiers. Chick-fil-A is also did a fundraiser that on Veterans Day, ten percent of all sales would be donated to Packages from Home, and other military organizations.
There were also some important people there that we got to interview, like Miss Arizona and her mother. Her full name is Kathryn Bulkley. She was born in Mesa, Arizona, and she sang the national anthem at the parade. The Mesa Mayor, Scott Smith, was there too! He spoke about Veterans Day. Marshall Trimble, Official Arizona State Historian, gave a very inspiring speech about how, on Veterans Day, people from all ethnic backgrounds, come together to celebrate being Americans. And as I walked down the street that day, I realized, he was right.
